Nobody should avoid dental care out of fear
We know that for many people, dental anxiety is very real. The sounds, the smells, the sensations — or a past experience that didn’t feel safe — can make even a simple appointment feel impossible to face.
At Beacon Cove Dental, we offer a range of sedation options designed to make your treatment as comfortable and stress-free as possible. Whether you need to take the edge off with nitrous oxide, or you need to be fully asleep under a general anaesthetic — we’ll work with you to find the right approach.
You are always in control here. Nothing happens without your understanding and your agreement.
A word From Our Dental Team
Our sedation options
Two ways we can help
We offer nitrous oxide for patients who want to stay awake but feel genuinely relaxed, and general anaesthetic for those who need or prefer to be fully asleep during treatment. Both options are safe, expertly supervised, and tailored to your individual needs.
Option 01
Nitrous Oxide
Happy gas · You stay awake · Relaxed & comfortable · You can drive home afterwards
Nitrous oxide — commonly known as happy gas — is a safe and fast-acting way to ease anxiety during your appointment without putting you to sleep. You breathe it in through a small mask resting gently over your nose. Within a few minutes you’ll feel relaxed, calm, and comfortable — while remaining fully awake and able to communicate with the team throughout.
One of the biggest advantages of nitrous oxide is that it clears your system almost immediately after the mask is removed. You can drive yourself to and from your appointment as normal, and there’s no recovery time or lingering drowsiness afterwards.
Nitrous oxide is also an excellent option for nervous children, helping to make their dental experience calm, positive, and free from fear — setting them up for a lifetime of good dental health.
- Takes effect within 2–3 minutes
- You remain fully conscious and in control at all times
- Wears off rapidly — you can drive home after your appointment
- No grogginess, no recovery period required
- Particularly helpful for needle anxiety, gag reflex, and general nervousness
- Great for nervous children as well as adults
- Assessed on a case-by-case basis to ensure suitability
Option 02
General Anaesthetic
Fully asleep · Specialist anaesthetist · Purpose-built day procedure facility · Recovery room on site
For patients who need to be fully asleep during dental treatment, we offer general anaesthetic in our purpose-designed general anaesthetic day procedure facility — complete with a dedicated recovery room and everything needed to ensure your safety and comfort throughout.
You are expertly cared for by a specialist anaesthetist and their medical team, who manage your anaesthetic from start to finish while we focus entirely on your dentistry. This is a full general anaesthetic — not sedation — and you will be completely asleep for the duration of your procedure.
A thorough pre-treatment consultation is required before proceeding. We’ll discuss your full medical history, any medications you take, and everything you need to know about what to expect on the day. A support person to drop you off and pick you up is essential.

Our approach
We'll find what's right for you
There’s no single answer when it comes to sedation. What works well for one patient may not be the best fit for another — and we take the time to understand your specific situation before making any recommendations.
If you’re considering nitrous oxide or a general anaesthetic, reaching out to us for a consultation is the first step. We’ll talk through your history, your concerns, and your treatment needs — and explain clearly what each option involves, what to expect, and what’s best suited to you.
Nothing will proceed without your full understanding and your agreement. At every step, you are in control.
